The thirst for information during the pandemic, together with consumers’ increasing reliance on digital technology, has helped reinvigorate the news industry. The largest media groups overcame an initial slump in advertising to see strong revenue growth on the back of a sharp rise in subscriptions, and are now expanding their digital product base, with significant investment in technology and talent, organically or through acquisitions.
With the war in Ukraine the latest crisis to dominate the news cycle, the challenge for news organisations is to build resilience across all revenue streams. What are the most promising formats and technologies legacy media and disruptors are using to attract and retain readers? What influence will the big social media platforms, and regulators, have on the expansion of the news industry?
